When gastroenterologist Walter Voegtin coined the word Paleo diet in his book published in 1975, little did he know that it will start a diet movement, which is so popular, a Paleo lifestyle or ideology develops with it. This is because the Paleo diet is arguably the healthiest way to eat. It is the only nutritional approach that is compatible to the human genetics and as such it helps us stay lean and strong.
The diet of our Paleolithic ancestors is composed of lean protein to support strong muscles and healthy bones, and help our immune system function optimally. And since protein also makes you feel satisfied between meals, it also prevents obesity. Fruits and vegetables are also present in the Paleo diet and since they are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, they also prevent cancer, diabetes and neurological diseases.
In addition, the diet also contains healthy fats from nuts, seeds, fish oil, olive oil, avocado and grass-fed meat. In contrast to the grain-fed animals of today, the types of fats found in grass fed meat, fowl and fish is lean and contains relatively low amounts of saturated fats and significant amounts of omega-3 fats such as EPA and DHA, which are beneficial to our health. They are also rich in monounsaturated and Omega-3 fats, which are known to dramatically reduce the likelihood of obesity, cancer, diabetes and heart diseases.
