“In the classic American road diet, a standard 4-lane street is replaced by a 3-lane street with a center lane reserved for left-hand turns, yielding ten or more feet that can be used for bike lanes, parking, or sidewalk extensions. While these conversions reduce injuries dramatically, a study of 17 different north American road diets showed zero net decrease in vehicle capacity.”
