“Hummingbird Moms” do all the work. Once the seed is planted, the male becomes a “Deadbeat Dad”. Now it’s up the mom to carry the load of building the nest, laying the eggs, and rearing the nestlings. After hatching, she spends all her time either brooding the nestlings or foraging for small flying insects to provide a high protein diet for rapid growth.
