When you’re busy if you lead a really hectic lifestyle like, let’s face it, most of us do and when you’re pushed for time it’s very easy to skip breakfast or to eat something that’s inappropriate. For many people breakfast is just a cup of coffee on the go, but a good breakfast is of utmost importance for good health and really when you think about it the clue is in the name: break-fast. You’re breaking your overnight fast, you have not eaten anything overnight, but your body has been working away, digesting last night’s dinner and so on and of course all your internal organs are working away so you’ve been burning up calories overnight. You’ve effectively been fasting overnight and now first thing in the morning you need to refuel.

In this video I want to talk about the simple secret to weight loss, and when it comes to weight loss I often think about the late movie director Michael Winner. He directed the Death Wish film starring Charles Bronson, amongst others. He was also a restaurant critic for a leading Sunday newspaper in the U.K.

At one point in his life when he was in his 60s he put on a lot of weight, probably eating all those meals in restaurants, I would presume. But he managed to shed it very quickly and somebody asked him what’s the secret to weight loss and he says, there’s no secret, just exercise more and eat less, and he had quite a point.

Beating Back Diabetes – My Battle

For all those people who asked about my progress in beating back the dreaded diabetes, and even those who said it is impossible to reverse, I thought I would give you the latest update after my clinic visit on Monday.

Last February my long-term blood glucose marker (A1C) reading (3 month rolling average) was 70 and I was apparently heading toward insulin use.

Dean Ornish, a clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and author of the 2008 book The Spectrum, has long touted a whole foods, plant-based diet to reverse heart disease as well as lose weight. Bill Phillips’ runaway best-selling book is geared for quick results and hard bodies. The concept is that you eat six small meals a day while weight training for 45 minutes, three times a week and training aerobically for at least 20 minutes, three times a week.

Best low-calorie diet: The Dash Diet

The National Institutes of Health endorses a heart-healthy plan that also reduces the risk of diabetes…. The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet recommends reducing your sodium intake and eating a variety of foods rich in nutrients that help lower blood pressure — potassium, calcium and magnesium. While technically not a weight-loss program, you lose unwanted pounds because it helps guide you toward healthier meals and snacks.

Best vegan diet: The McDougall Plan

Former President Clinton adopted a vegan diet…. The McDougall plan features plant-based foods, including whole grains and whole-grain products such as pasta and tortillas, a wide assortment of fruits and vegetables and simple exercise like a daily walk. The diet shuns animal foods, dairy products, eggs, fish and all oils including olive oil.

Best high-volume diet: The Volumetrics Diet

The emphasis is on high-volume, low-calorie foods that allow you to eat more volume without packing on extra pounds. The diet was pioneered by Penn State University nutrition professor Barbara Rolls. Her latest book is The Ultimate Volumetrics Diet, written with Mindy Hermann.

Best high-protein diet: The Atkins and Eco Atkins Diet

On Atkins, you can feast on steak with béarnaise sauce, eggs, bacon and cheddar cheese omelets…. The first two weeks are the most restrictive and then you gradually introduce approved carbs back into the diet…. For non-meat eaters, there’s a new vegetarian version called Eco Atkins featuring plant-based proteins.
